I Curled My Hair With A Chopstick Curling Iron And It *Almost* Came Out Like I Wanted It To

The barrel curling wands and irons were just not sufficing. I desired big boingy bouncy hair. Instead of going huge, I decided to go as little as I could. I had actually seen videos on Tik Tok of ladies using a chopstick-sized curling iron to produce huge retro hair. I HAD to have it. So I got a 3/10 inch curling iron and I got to work.

I have always desired curly hair considering that I was a kid. My preschool friend Anna had curl curls and I had pin-straight hair, and I clearly keep in mind recommending that we change heads due to the fact that we each wanted the other ladys hair type. Through the years my hair has actually gotten wavier and was even curly for a year or 2, but Ive never gotten the big curly hair of my dreams.

My natural hair texture is a secret. Sometimes its like this, other times it captures a few curls. Air drying is a gamble, but luckily, as Ive gotten older, my hair holds a curl really well.

This is what I was dealing with, to begin with.

I decided that to attain the craziest curliest appearance, I needed to utilize small areas of my hair. I sectioned my hair off in layers and used ~ 1/2 inch sections. I switched on How To Get Away With Murder to pass the time and got to curling.

After 35-40 minutes of curling, this is what I ended up with:

My girlfriend was literally speechless. Her face stated, “what have you done to yourself?”. And I concurred. It was not what I was opting for. It was really Rick-James-Meets-An-Irish-Dancer. Very me-in-first-grade-when-my-mom-let-me-sleep-in-curlers-for-my-birthday. It was extremely bad. I had to rely on the process, so I kept going.

To attempt to attain the look I was going for, I first separated with all of the curls with my fingers. I ensured that they still had shape, however werent so clumped together. Then, I used a teasing brush and texture spray to try to bump up my roots. And this is what I created:

Okay! From the front, I was beginning to actually feel myself. But, then I looked at the back:

Would I do this again? For sure. But there are couple of things I would do differently. Of all, I would probably clean and blowdry my hair before I curled it since my roots were waaay too flat to pull it off. Likewise, I would have somebody else assist me out with that back of my hair so that the curls went to my root all the way around, not just in the front. I would see if I could part my hair to the side instead of the middle. In general, Im pumped that huge curly hair might be in the cards for me. Till then, Ill be imagining my Merida moment.

This design was certainly my favorite of all of them.

This was enjoyable, however I felt too much like I was preparing for a reboot of Big Comfy Couch.

I left the 2 buns in, prepared, and headed to Target to live life with curly hair. I actually got a couple of compliments from strangers!

I liked this one, but it was tough to get the bun simply.

My preschool finest good friend Anna had ringlet curls and I had pin-straight hair, and I clearly keep in mind recommending that we change heads due to the fact that we each wanted the other girls hair type. Through the years my hair has gotten wavier and was even curly for a year or 2, however Ive never gotten the big curly hair of my dreams.

Turns out, I wasnt reaching the curls as well as I should have. It just wasnt filling out in the back enough.

I couldnt get my hair to lay nicely in a side part to see if that assisted my root circumstance. However, I did save the look by styling it in a number of updos.
