Mexico is approaching 150,000 coronavirus-related deaths– the worlds 4th biggest death toll– with over 1.75 million cases, according to Johns Hopkins University. With little screening done, the actual case numbers are likely far greater, according to health authorities.

López Obrador was elected in 2018, lifted by a big base of wide-working class advocates, after campaigning on the fight versus domestic corruption and violence. Now, between Mexicos deepening financial recession and the pandemic, the countrys poorest people are bearing the force of dueling crises.

López Obrador, 67, has resisted lockdowns and repeatedly dismissed the health dangers of the infection.

López Obrador plans to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, he stated on Twitter, to go over Mexicos acquisition of the Russias Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine.

” Regardless of friendly relations,” he composed in Spanish, “there is a possibility that they will send us the Sputnik V vaccine.”

In December, Mexico ended up being the first Latin American country to begin a vaccination effort upon getting an initial batch of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Mexico has administered more than 600,000 dosages so far.

” Pandemics will not do anything to us,” he asserted in March. In late July, as the country crossed 46,000 deaths due to the coronavirus, the president informed press reporters he would not use a mask till Mexico had gotten rid of corruption: “Then Ill place on a mask and Ill stop talking.”

His symptoms are mild and hes currently begun receiving medical treatment, he said in a tweet revealing the news on Sunday night.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated he has evaluated favorable for COVID-19.

” As always, I am positive,” he composed. “We will all move forward.”
