” APhA is dissatisfied that FDA would run the risk of the security and security of our nations drug supply by creating a complex and convoluted program enabling legal importation of specific drugs from Canada. We think FDAs brand-new drug importation program is not a safe way to minimize drug costs– and puts patients at risk,” the group stated in a news release..

The American Pharmacists Association stated that the rule, which was published Sept. 25, endangers client safety by developing supply chain vulnerabilities that might present fake or hazardous drugs.

Tom Kraus, vice president of government relations for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, told Drug Topics it is “deeply worried that enabling wholesale importation of drugs will punch an enormous hole in our countrys drug supply chain, exposing patients to threats and potentially weakening a costly track-and-trace system thats in the midst of application. We are highly encouraging of efforts to decrease drug pricing, however not if, like importation, they come at the expense of client safety with no warranty of significant cost savings over the long term.”.

APhA also stated the act undermines the Drug Supply Chain Security Act by developing supply chain disruptions and product selection confusion that may limit clients access to drugs and makes complex insurance coverage and drug store reimbursement..
