Don Mabe: I want I would have learned earlier, prior to becoming a CPO … that leadership is a group sport. Early on in my profession, I was much more focused on how much I could move the ball, putting it on my back due to the fact that I was an individual who wanted to move. I wanted that activity and the action of moving it. But the strength of the group would just be as strong as I was. Thats a very important lesson to find out early in your career. I might have discovered that quicker if I would have been a lot more mindful of that procedure.

Aside from that, a few of the things I wanted I would have found out or had focused on faster would be to broaden my knowledge due to the fact that pharmacy is not just something. Its not simply healthcare facility [drug store] or specialized [drug store] Its truly all of those locations. So I d state ending up being a lot more focused on broadening your understanding and having a more total understanding of those areas. No one walks into any of these positions with a complete understanding of all elements. Thats true of any job. I would say if I would have continued that focus even more or previously, I think that would be a better thing for me to make the learning curve much easier..

Throughout a session at the Beckers Virtual Pharmacy Event Sept. 22, a panel of drug store executives went over a few of the skills, accomplishments and learning experiences that helped them be successful and the abilities they want they had learned previously in their professions. Panelists were:.

LeeAnn Miller: I did a truly great job in my clinical world of developing networks with the best stakeholders, however I didnt go much beyond that to the organization or financing folks. I had the fortune of going through a strategic dexterity and development program through the Yale School of Management, which was simply incredible. Stepping into a new leadership role, I suffered from imposter syndrome, which I know a lot of people experience, but its so valuable to hear someone thats been in that same position.

Q: Can you share one final takeaway for our audience today about management and the chief drug store officer function?

Other than that, some of the things I wished I would have found out or had focused on earlier would be to broaden my understanding since drug store is not just one thing. Pharmacists and drug store leaders are so well-skilled to take senior management functions, and drug store is an essential motorist of quality, safety and financial performance.


DM: Focus on your team. Management is team-driven. I feel like I stand on the shoulders of giants. Its not how good I am. I have great people, and I feel like that theyre the ones who really make you look good. Its not a matter of just stating those words, its actually thinking that and empowering them. Broadly, see the role for what it can be, pursue that with the team and give direction. Management is directional. My grandfather was a minister. He utilized to state, “Without a vision, individuals perish.” And I believe that thats something I would state I gained from him and Ive also applied it [in my function] Youve got to supply the direction for where you would like to go, or people will perish along the way without a clear vision. I believe that its extremely important that we offer that instructions and then step out of the way and let the team be effective.

LM: Im going to talk to those who perhaps arent believing they can do it or questioning, “Should I attempt management? Pharmacists and pharmacy leaders are so well-skilled to take senior leadership functions, and pharmacy is a key chauffeur of quality, safety and financial performance. Theres simply so much opportunity to align our methods with the health system techniques.
