Bias against natural hair limits job opportunities for Black women

Black ladies with natural hairdos are often perceived as less professional than Black women with straightened hair, according to research conducted at Durham, N.C.-based Duke University.

” Its a serious consideration and may contribute to the lack of representation for Blacks in some organizational settings,” Dr. Rosette said. The research study also found racial discrimination versus Black natural hairstyles more typical in industries where norms dictate a conservative appearance.

” Some organizations remove away biographical info such as a persons name and other ideas about gender or race from application materials,” Dr. Rosette said, including that the procedure, referred to as blinding, has been shown to reduce comparable kinds of societal predisposition.

Researchers hired participants who screened job prospects based on profiles of both White and black females. Black women with natural hairstyles got lower ratings on professionalism and skills and werent advised as frequently for interviews compared to Black ladies with corrected the alignment of hair and white ladies with curly or straight hair..
