For its analysis, the Sheps Center specified a health center closure as the cessation in the arrangement of inpatient services. As of June 29, all of the centers noted below no longer offered inpatient care. However, a few of them still used other services, including outpatient care, imaging, immediate care or rehabilitation services.
Of the 33 states that have seen at least one rural healthcare facility close since 2010, those with the most closures remain in the South, according to the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research.
