What does a day at work for a Psychiatry expert appear like?
As a locum Psychiatrist a day usually would be going to the handover from the nursing personnel between 8am and 9am. They tell the multidisciplinary team about every patient on the ward and if any considerable modifications have actually happened in their psychological state overnight.
What do you like about your profession?
I like Psychiatry as everyones story is distinct. You are able to spend more time with clients than a specialty like basic surgical treatment. I also like working as part of a multi disciplinary team consisting of nurses, social employees, physical therapists, pharmacists, psychologists.
How far has mental health awareness gained traction in the last 10-15 years and how far does it still need to get?
It is excellent to see Mental health being talked about in the media now and the preconception is slowly reducing however there still is a long method to go in minimizing the stigma that mental health customers face.
Is there still a preconception within the service, sporting and political world about psychological health?
Certainly there is. I work as a Sports Psychiatrist too and we have a lot of work to do within the sporting world to lower the stigma elite athletes and training staff face (this includes retired elite professional athletes and coaches).
Would you advise Psychiatry as a career choice?
Yes I would suggest a profession in Psychiatry as every day is different. I recently provided suggestions to a junior registrar on how essential it is to care for your own mental health as operating in this field can be mentally draining pipes however extremely satisfying. I promote for a great life balance.
What advantages are involved in ending up being a locum doctor?
