CERN approves plans for a $23 billion, 62-mile long super-collider

In a new advancement method paper, CERN emphasized that its existing priority is to complete a “high-luminosity” upgrade of the present LHC with high-field superconducting NbSn magnets. This would create sometimes more accidents than the LHC can now, enhancing the possibilities of seeing Higgs bosons and other unusual particles.
The future collider would be integrated in two phases. The first version would smash positrons and electrons together to make the most of production of Higgs bosons so that researchers can get more accurate data on the particles. The 2nd version would be a 100 TeV proton-proton collider created to produce new particles that might expand on and even change the Standard Model.
The aim is to start construction of the new tunnel by 2038, but theres one enormous obstacle: cash. The new job is so costly that CERN will require to look for funding outside its EU member state countries. Instead, it may require to produce a worldwide organization that includes the US, China and Japan.
It could be a hard sell, especially as the brand-new collider wouldnt have as clear an objective as the LHC did. Particle physics and the Standard Model are at a location where the application of science is needed to verify theories. “We do understand that the only method to find responses is by experiment and the only place to find them is where we havent been able to look yet,” UK physicist Tara Shears told Nature.
